The role of forensic vehicle examiners in insurance investigations

First of all, what is a forensic vehicle examiner? The role of a forensic vehicle examiner is varied and depends on whom the examiner is employed by. In the insurance and legal sectors, forensic vehicle examiners often assist in answering questions which are pivotal to determine fault or culpability.

Instances can include whether a vehicle was defective when involved in a collision, whether seatbelts were being worn or not, whether the brakes were being applied, whether the lights were working, whether work undertaken on a vehicle had led to a collision and various other reasons.

The work of a forensic vehicle examiner, can also assist in determining insurance claim validity and the identification of fraud.

For those that work in the car insurance industry, ask yourself, how many claims do you see where you suspect that either a defect has contributed to a collision occurring or where you suspect a vehicle has a pre-existing defect which may not be an insured peril. What do you do about it?

Many insurance companies might make some initial enquiries with the policyholder, but if that does not yield the desired results, they simply send the claim for payment.

Examples of this include a policyholder who crashed on a bend in inclement weather where their tyres were not road legal, passengers making injury claims when they were not wearing a seatbelt or even using a vehicle with a known defect.

Worse than this however, are claims with exaggerated damage or collisions that simply did not happen at all.

Our previous claims have involved engines that have suffered catastrophic damage and rather than pay for repairs, the policyholders have staged accidents to have their vehicle written off and declared a total-loss.
