In recent blog posts, we have been focusing more on vehicles, vehicle technology, how they work and the common causes for failure.
In an earlier post, we looked at the main components of an engine, which might be worth a read before reading this post. If you want to read that blog first, click here. I frequently get asked questions about timing belts, so I've decided to list some of them here, the most common question being, what is a timing belt, so let's get started.
What happens when a timing belt fails?
When a timing belt (or chain or gear) fails, the outcome can vary greatly, from minimal damage to catastrophic engine damage. Whilst this can be based on a variety of factors, including whether the engine is an interference or non-interference engine, a significant factor in my experience is sheer luck.
It is worth mentioning that whilst timing belts, chains and gears can fail, there can also be other reasons why a timing device might fail prematurely, from poor maintenance, faulty or defective component or even the result of a secondary failure (such as where a pulley, guide or tensioner seizes).
If you have had a timing belt, timing chain or timing chain fail and are looking to discover why it has failed, contact our forensic vehicle examiner today. Generally, a forensic vehicle inspection is required
