What does event data record?

What data does event data record?

Generally, where EDR data is available it records:

  • Vehicle speed,
  • Engine speed,
  • Whether the brake pedal was being pressed,
  • Whether the accelerator pedal was being pressed and how hard,
  • Steering wheel angle (position),
  • Whether seatbelts were being worn or not,
  • Forces involved,

With the introduction of recent EU legislation, the fitting of an EDR to a vehicle will become common where almost all, if not all vehicles, will have an EDR fitted from new. EU legislation prescribes which data has to be recorded, but invariably, manufacturers can and do choose to add additional data which will be accessible to investigators.
