What is the collision data retrieval tool?

Many modern vehicles are fitted with an event data recorder (EDR). The data an EDR contains is freely available, if you have the correct tools. One of the most popular tools to capture that data is the Bosch Collision Data Retrieval (CDR) tool, but it is worth mentioning it is not the only one.
Like all systems, Bosch CDR has its limitations. In particular, it cannot download vehicles manufactured by Jaguar, Land Rover and Hyundai to name a few. Whilst Bosch CDR is one of the most popular tools, it is not the only one. Driven Forensics has access to a suite of tools which are collectively capable of downloading most vehicles across the market.
But what does the event data recorder actually record? In the event of a collision, the data from the vehicle for up to 5 seconds before the collision is recorded on to the EDR. Whilst the data stored is different vehicle by vehicle, generally it contains data relating to the vehicles speed, whether the accelerator or brake pedal was being depressed, the engine speed, whether seatbelts were clipped in, the profile of the person in the seat (i.e. child/adult) and information showing the forces the vehicle was experiencing around the time of the collision.
